The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is an identification code consisting of 17 alphanumeric characters. This code must be present on the chassis of each vehicle, as per international regulations, to ensure its recognition and traceability. Over the years, the presence of this code has been instrumental in reducing the number of auto thefts.

The VIN code is visible on the dashboard or window of the car. In this way, it is difficult to resell a stolen vehicle or its parts on the black market. Most used parts dealers do not purchase VIN-etched spare parts unless the seller submits some documentation as proof of ownership.

It is essential for the safety of the market that the VIN code is permanent and remains visible. That’s why the best technology for this application is laser engraving.

Advantages of laser marking

Until a few years ago, the VIN code was marked exclusively with micro-percussion systems. These systems are not as precise or versatile as the laser that is replacing them. Laser engraving has many advantages for Automotive manufacturers:

  • Lasers can reach any angle of the component
  • No risk of damage to the vehicle chassis as laser markers do not require pins, templates or clamping systems
  • Complete flexibility in managing multiple layouts on a single production line - no need to change tooling
  • Verification and correction of the marked code through the vision system
  • Lasers are less noisy

VIN characteristics

Our solutions

Our solution is a compact integration laser based on a fully air-cooled, active fiber optic Laser source. The rack and scanning head are designed to be easily integrated onto a robot or industrial manipulator.
FiberFly reaches a power of 200W and has the special feature of a very long pulse. The combination of these two features allows for clean, precise and fast marking.

A Siemens S1200 family PLC with PROFIsafe module and PN/PN coupler is found inside the cabinet equipped with safety circuit.
The interface system is customised according to the end customer’s needs in order to automatically populate the marking content, keep a history on an SQL database on the machine and communicate the marking content to the MES-ERP.
